This is a design attributed to Suzuki Harunobu, one of the most famous of Japanese print designers, who worked in the mid 18th century. He is most famous for his depictions of beautiful young women, but he did create a number of more general designs for prints.

This design incorporates two of the most important symbols of the New Year in traditional Japanese culture: the long-lived crane, and the first sunrise of the new year. To make the print - which I used for my own new year card some years ago - I carved the image onto blocks of mountain cherry, and then used fine quality hand-made Japanese paper to pull the impressions.

Shall we zoom in a bit closer?

A special feature of the print is its use of the karazuri (embossing) technique. To see this in the way that the viewers of that century did, one must turn off any overhead lighting and hold the print near a window or lamp. The light falling horizontally across the print will then highlight the embossments and allow the full texture of the beautiful Japanese paper to be enjoyed.

Let's go a bit closer still ...

And ... just because we can ... still closer!

The print is available as a pre-packaged gift item:

The print is mounted on a backboard, and accompanied by a short descriptive pamphlet giving some background.

The print package is slipped into an envelope ... which is wrapped in a traditional wrapping paper (pattern will vary) ... and mailed in an envelope with current commemorative stamps. (stamps will vary from package to package ...)

The price for the gift pack includes packing and postage (air mail) to anywhere on the planet. I can send it to you, or directly to somebody on your behalf as a 'gift' item (in that case, include their contact details using the Comment space on the order form).
