( Change currency: $ / £ / € ) Price: $ 40.00£ 32.25€ 36.75   Description: This is a new/old print, and by that we mean that it is freshly made (printed very recently in our workshop) but uses quite old woodblocks.rnThe designer is Tsuchiya Koitsu, who lived and worked in the first half of the 20th century, and the block set was originally carved at the request of the publisher Doi Hanga sometime in the 1930s. We here at Mokuhankan are now using those same blocks here in our own workshop, printing them by workers who could be the grand-children of the original carver! It's not easy to make prints from a block set that is this old, especially one that was used over a period of many years to make literally thousands of prints. The registration marks were shimmed so many times they are nearly indecipherable, and many shapes on the wood surface are worn and rounded. This is in start contrast to most of the blocks we use, which are of course freshly carved, and thus quite 'easy' to print. So a job like this one is excellent practice for our young staff printers, who must learn all the ins and outs of handling such difficult blocks.
