Description: This is one of Hiroshige’s rare pictures of beautiful women. The fan form of the print is not common as this kind of print was meant to be used and not to be kept.

Here he depicts a courtesan in a half-length portrait, she is slightly smiling and opening a fortune-telling paper with her hairpin. Even though Hiroshige was more of a landscape talent, for the background of this print he preferred to choose a graphic pattern.

We can notice some other interesting details about the color palette used, such as the beautiful pink shade on her eyes. Also, the contrast between the gray, red, and purple of the courtesan’s kimono makes her white skin stand out in such a charming way! The title frame on the left shows wild geese flying in the night sky.

This print is a post-war reproduction by the Adachi Company.
