Description: From the series 'Customs of the East' (20 designs showing the life and customs of ordinary people in Edo).

This print shows three figures walking on a windy day. The one at the front seems to be struggling to move forward, judging by the way she is holding on to her clothes tightly, as if it were a strong wind. She is wearing a striped kimono, and her head is covered by a black hood. Behind her, we can see another woman (perhaps her servant) carrying a closed parasol. A boy is walking beside her, holding tightly to the string of a kite, as if afraid that it might fly away. The string has caught the servant's foot.

It is interesting how Kiyonaga uses graphic patterns, here all the figures are dressed in clothes with stripes.

The whole impression of movement and dynamism of the scene is very interesting, because even though there is no background or figurative representation of the wind, we can still imagine it by observing the gestures and expressions of the figures, they make us live what a windy day they are experiencing.

A reproduction published by Ishu Kanko-kai and produced by Kajikawa Kobo probably in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
