Description: From the series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856-1858) which actually contains 118 total prints, in full vertical format of classic Hiroshige landscapes.

The people in this print are part of a ’toryo-okuri’ which is a procession to send off the master carpenter, as he starts the construction of a new building. With most buildings in Edo being built of wood, they constantly had to be repaired and rebuilt, due to fires. As a result, carpenters were some of the most powerful artisans in the city. The person leading this procession and the following ceremony is the Shinto priest. He is carrying a pole with several symbolic items on it, which will be placed on the roof once the new structure is completed.

The shop on the left is ‘Daimaru’, a famous dry goods store, which was founded in Kyoto in 1717. It opened its first store in Edo in 1743. Today, Daimaru is still an iconic department store above Tokyo Station. The shop sign in the left corner says “cash payment prices as marked”. Fixed prices meant a big change in the class-based society because it made all customers equal. As this was established in Japan around 1683, this was far earlier than anywhere else in the world.

There are some slight foxing spots mostly on the margins of this print.
