Description: This is one of the "Selected Masterpieces of Japanese Ink Brush Painting" (日本水墨画名作撰) published by Tanseisha probably in the 1970s or 1980s. The original ink brush paintings, which express the depth of nature in a world of limited ink colors, were turned into woodblock prints with 85 to 90 impressions by master printers using antique Nara ink (black, blue, and brown).

With only some simple lines, and with just shades of black, the artist succeeds in depicting Hotei, the god of contentment. He has a cheerful face and a big belly, recognized as the Fat, Laughing Buddha, he carries a large cloth bag over his back with treasures, including food and drink.

There are very slight creases mainly at the margins of this print.
