Designer: Ando Hiroshige Era: Recent | Currency: $ / £ / € Price:  Description: After the great success of "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido," Hiroshige's next large-scale series of landscape paintings was "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," picking up the theme so successfully treated by his senior Hokusai. It was the last of Hiroshige's major works, and he passed away before it was (posthumously) published in 1876. Although some of his landscapes depict the same locations as Hokusai's series, the nicely balanced composition and color tones in the vertical format give the work a sense of season, poetry, and a calm impression. This print depicts a spectacular view from Konodai, a famous spot for viewing Mt. Fuji and autumn leaves in Shimousa. The person standing on the cliff is a monk of Sonei-ji Temple. It was common for monks to give a guide to visitors and that seems to be happening here as well. The vibrant evening cloud around Mt. Fuji and the boats sailing back give a sentimental feeling. This particular print is a reproduction by Adachi company published in 1998. There is a small chiri (mulberry bark scraps) in the middle right area of this print.
