Description: After the great success of "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido," Hiroshige's next large-scale series of landscape paintings was "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," picking up the theme so successfully treated by his senior Hokusai.


It was the last of Hiroshige's major works, and he passed away before it was (posthumously) published in 1876. Although some of his landscapes depict the same locations as Hokusai's series, the nicely balanced composition and color tones in the vertical format give the work a sense of season, poetry, and a calm impression.

Otsuki no Hara (Otsuki Plain) was located near Otsuki-juku on Koshu Road, but it is not clear where it is today. This print gives a gorgeous impression by filling up the frame with all kinds of autumn botanicals like silver grass, wild chrysanthemums, bellflowers, and eastern valerian.

This particular print is a reproduction by Adachi company published in 1998.
