Description: This print is from "Famous Places of the Province", published by Kaiseisha in 1981. It consists of 19 prints from two series by Katsushika Hokusai: 11 prints from "Famous Bridges in the Provinces" and 8 prints from "A Tour of Waterfalls".

While the word yatsuhashi in the title literally means "eight-plank bridge", the term was also used to refer to bridges not necessarily conforming to the "eight-plank" rule, as we see in this print. Most yatsuhashi are low, zigzag bridges over water that perhaps more closely resemble boardwalks than bridges. The geometric depiction of the bridge, along with the lack of shadows, make it difficult to determine at first glance whether sections of the bridge are going upwards or into the distance, bringing to mind the "Penrose stairs" or "impossible staircase" most famously depicted by Escher.
